The sport of kayaking is now part of the unified recreation services. Darlene participated in a new venture in the summer and fully embraced paddling down Deer Creek at Eden Mill Nature Center. Many recreation options are offered for both children and adults with disabilities throughout Harford County.
Recreation Support Services
Recreation Support Services at The Arc was designed to meet the overall needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as to have a positive impact on health outcomes including socialization and physical fitness.People with intellectual and developmental disabilities' decreased participation in recreation and leisure negatively impacts on life satisfaction as well as achievement of desired outcomes for employment and independent living. Thanks to a grant for the Department of Education, The Arc has designed a new and promising strategy for increasing participants and families knowledge, choice, access and participation while expanding the capacity of community recreation and leisure organizations' ability to fully include people with disabilities.
Some of our Recreation Opportunities are as follows:
- Unified Recreation...activities that are composed of adults with and without developmental disabilities including basketball, football, bocce and kayaking.
- Plein Air Painting at the Anita Leight Estuary Center
- Participation in area health clubs
